Record setting low temperatures in Illinois The Associated Press Meteorologists say cold, dry air combined with snow on the ground has created record setting low temperatures in Illinois this week. Chicago-area temperatures Monday dipped down to four degrees, according to the National Weather Service, beating the previous record of six degrees which was first set in 1895. It was even colder in the Quad Cities, where temperatures reached a frigid minus four degrees. The previous record low temperature of minus two degrees was set in 1886. The weather service said the temperatures are about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. Tonight, wind chills in some areas will make single digits temperatures feel even colder. Chicago officials said today that five Human Service offices are open around the city to serve as warming centers. They said 250 people visited those centers Monday. The city is also conducting well-being checks with senior citizens and responding to complaints by renters about low temperatures in their apartments. According to officials, landlords are required to keep the temperature inside at 68 degrees during the day and 66 degrees overnight. In the last 24 hours, the Buildings Department has received 187 complaints for inadequate heating. The cold spell is expected to continue until the weekend. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
