surly dipti
i am over at Lori's teaching her how to make Indian food. She was diagnosed with celiac sprue, aka gluten sensitive enteropathy, which means that she cannot eat ANY wheat or wheat based products.....let's put that into perspective people.....no bread, no cake, no pancakes, no SOY SAUCE (brewed with wheat), no pasta, no chocolate chip cookies (except for those made of rice flour.....if they even count)....no tortillas...i mean, the list is friggin endless....so I am teaching her how to make a bunch of different Indian dishes that are gluten free.....there is actually so much variety in Indian cooking, especially with different flours like corn flour and rice flour and chickpea flour.....so we are almost done making four different dishes today....the Arod comes into Midway at like midnight, and though she is insistent on taking a cab....over my dead body she will.....so I will borrow Lori's car to pick her up.....Lori has to wake up at 5 am manana..... Anyway, so last night, I went to a friend's 'mehndi'.....the experience put me in a surlyfoul mood. the 'mehndi,' and I put it in quotes, is supposedly when all the girls get together and put henna on each other's hands, and that is a traditional part of the desi wedding ceremony. point being, there was no mehdi there, and though is was supposed to start at 7pm, nobody really got there till like 9, because the groom's side women were getting their hair done by a hairdresser while we all sat around, starving, and I am sure that Aunty would not have wanted to insult the groom's side by having us wat before they came.....and so we waited.....and waited.....we ended up eating... at 9:40, ate, and then left at 10:15. missed all the dances and the cute girly planned things, hands henna bare.....and I was like, you have got to be kidding me. I know we all make jokes about Indian Standard Time and what not.....but to have guests sitting around for hours and not being fed because people aren't showing up....it was like sitting there, trying to look like you are having a good time....while you are being shat on. ANd then whole time you are hungry. And the whole time you know that you have an hour drive ahead of you, it is a workday, you are on surgery and you have to wake up in at like 5 or 6am.....i just felt so angry at how people can't just make it umm....lemme save this for now...need to go....will write mo lata
